The 3rd edition of the international online computer programming competition, DEVCHAMPION, took place on the evening of November 30 and again brought together more than 500 developers from 21 African countries. This completely free competition, and open to all types of profiles, highlights the important pool of young African developers by allowing the best to be hired by companies.
AfricaCRM&SI, a Burkinabè company is at the origin of this competition. In 2019, this expert firm in IT strategy and organization, wishes to meet the growing demand of African companies for developers and imagines an inter-African competition proposing to solve as many algorithms as possible in record time with $5,000 (3,000,000 FCFA ) key reward offered to the winner this year, by the BCB, a Burkinabè bank.
The project quickly won over hundreds of developers, excited to shine in their favorite programming language: C, C++, C#, PHP, Java, Python, etc., and to be spotted by hiring companies. DEVCHAMPION is launched and today represents a community of more than 1,500 young African developers and more than a hundred connections between young developers and companies or project leaders.
Mauritanian Youssouf EMINE, DEVCHAMPION 2022
- Youssouf EMINE, winner 2022
On Wednesday, November 30, after two hours of tests where the participants had to pass six challenges, EMINE Youssouf, of Mauritanian nationality, a doctoral student in mathematics at the École Polytechnique Montréal and an engineer from the École Polytechnique de Paris, was the faster and is the DEVCHAMPION 2022. He beat KOGUE Hyacinthe from Togo and HOUNDO Baudelaire from Benin. The 1st Burkinabè is ranked 12th, it is SAWADOGO Moctar Abdel Latif, freelance developer and Master student in Artificial Intelligence in Paris, who is a regular at the competition. All practice competitive programming to improve their technical knowledge.
Today, companies are mainly looking for talented developers with at least two years of proven experience and who are able to take charge of digital projects independently, says Dr Aristide Aly BOYARM, the initiator of the DEVCHAMPION project. He also specifies that the generalization of teleworking with the advent of COVID-19 in European and American companies is an opportunity for young developers from sub-Saharan Africa to work remotely for companies in these geographical areas; for this they must be competitive with the Indians in particular in terms of technical skills and prices.
In this sense, the firm plans to soon launch a DEVCHAMPION academy to strengthen the capacities of young developers, aligning their technological skills with the real needs of companies. This training can be supplemented by international certifications that will recognize the skills of the certified, and thus increase their employability through partnerships with leading technology companies.
Great prospects for this initiative which contributes to creating opportunities and bridges allowing young Africans specialized in IT development to access decent work and entrepreneurship; only problem, the low rate of young girls who participate in the competitions despite a special prize awarded to the one who is best ranked in the competition.
