The Alpine A110 Sastruga is unveiled today at the pop-up Grand Palais and will be on display there until Sunday, April 10, 2022. Alpine and the artistic collective Obvious present the fruit of their artistic collaboration, an “art car” that explores the creative potential artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithms by bringing together technology and emotions. This collaboration is a continuation of Alpine’s artistic commitment, which is now taking a new step.
By taking part in the Art Paris 2022 event, a meeting of modern and contemporary art, Alpine, accompanied by Obvious, continues its artistic commitment by exhibiting a work there for the second consecutive year.
A110 Sastruga, an original work that places technological and scientific innovation at the heart of artistic creation
Alpine has built its legend by placing technical innovation and automotive excellence at the service of performance and emotions. To imagine this work, Obvious was inspired by the brand’s legendary sporting heritage to invent a unique object that materializes an imaginary race, a synthesis of all the circuits on which Alpine has distinguished itself. Presented on the body of the A110, an emblematic model of the Alpine brand, an imaginary circuit, generated thanks to artificial intelligence, has been drawn. Its stylization is inspired by the phenomenon of sastrugas, undulations created by the saltation of the snow under the action of the wind which traces geometric undulations on the ground. This phenomenon echoes Alpine’s DNA and represents the creative basis of this project. At the back of the A110, there is a mathematical formula, the artists’ signature, which symbolizes the algorithm with which the collective worked to generate the imaginary Alpine circuit.
This exceptional model, the result of several months of collaboration between Alpine and Obvious, bridges the gap between heritage and modernity, and questions society’s relationship to new technologies. The work, through the creation of the imaginary circuit, exploits the capabilities of machine learning, which consists of allowing computers to “learn” from data, and GANs algorithms, a class of algorithms of unsupervised learning. To achieve this layout, the artists drew on the circuits that have marked the history of the brand with the A arrow (Le Mans, Paul Ricard, Pedralbes, Pescara, Montjuïc, Monsanto, Magny-Cours, Long Beach, Losail, Kyalami) and take up the familiar elements to make it realistic: pitlane, acceleration, deceleration and overtaking zones. The originality also lies in a crow’s feet which offers the possibility to the pilot borrowing it to choose the route he prefers. This imaginary circuit is an opportunity to project the car into a futuristic universe with multiple potentialities.
“Obvious was able to capture the DNA of our brand to create an original and unprecedented work that demonstrates that we are resolutely turned towards the future. Obvious and Alpine share a common ambition: to use technological innovation to reinvent themselves and explore an ever-expanding field of possibilities. Thanks to this collaboration, we are proud to contribute to the emergence of a new form of creation and to associate ourselves with these visionary artists. »
LAURENT ROSSI, CEO OF ALPINE
“This work is the culmination of a long creative process during which we sought to imagine a unique object that brings together technology and sporting know-how, drawing on the heritage of this historic brand. Alpine gave us great creative freedom, this outcome is the demonstration of their desire to conquer new territories. »
Art Paris, the first modern and contemporary art fair
Propelled by the success of its September 2021 edition which inaugurated the Grand Palais Éphémère on the Champ-de-Mars and attracted a record number of 72,746 visitors, Art Paris is bouncing back in the spring, from April 7 to 10, 2022, with a list top flight of 130 galleries from around twenty countries.
The Alpine stand (D16) presents the different stages of the creative process and the dialogue conducted between Alpine and Obvious to lead to the work presented on the forecourt of the Grand Palais Éphémère.
