CEA, Soitec, GlobalFoundries and STMicroelectronics have announced a new collaboration with the intention of jointly defining the roadmap for the next generation of FD-SOI (fully depleted silicon-on-insulator) technology. FD-SOI semiconductors and innovation have strategic value for France and the European Union as well as for customers around the world. FD-SOI brings significant benefits to designers and customer systems, including reduced power consumption as well as easier integration of additional features such as connectivity and security, a key feature for automotive, IoT applications and mobile.
“For more than 20 years, the CEA has been a pioneer of FD-SOI technology within the Grenoble-Crolles ecosystem. The CEA is part of a long history of in-depth cooperation in R&D, both with STMicroelectronics, Soitec and GlobalFoundries; he has had a very active role in the initiatives launched by the European Commission and Member States to set up a complete FD-SOI ecosystem, from material suppliers to electronic design centers and CAD tool vendors electronics and ‘fabless’ companies, all the way to end users,” said François Jacq, General Administrator of the CEA. “The CEA is very excited by this opportunity to prepare a new generation of FD-SOI technology offering higher performance, lower power consumption and lower costs, in order to meet the needs of major European markets such as automotive, ‘IoT, 5G/6G and Industry 4.0. »
“FD-SOI is a key technology for the dynamic markets we serve and an important driver of growth for our industry and our customers,” said Paul Boudre, CEO of Soitec. “The FD-SOI alliance that we are pleased to announce today builds on Soitec’s ability to drive substrate innovation and help launch a new generation of semiconductors serving a wide variety of markets, including connectivity, automotive, IoT and artificial intelligence. With our partners and allies, we want to confirm our technological leadership and continue to drive innovation in global microelectronics. This collaboration also illustrates the close collaboration that we maintain with our customers to advance technologies, to meet their future needs and to support them in bringing them to market at a sustained pace”.
“We look forward to deepening our partnership with key French and European stakeholders across the semiconductor value chain and, more specifically, to building together on our highly differentiated FD-SOI based solutions. to address the rapid growth of integrated circuits requiring low power, connectivity and security in automotive, IoT and smart mobile devices,” said Tom Caulfield, CEO of GlobalFoundries. “Europe’s dynamic semiconductor ecosystem is important to us, and we will continue to invest to increase our presence in the European Union as part of our global growth strategy. »
“ST has been a pioneer in innovation on FD-SOI which has been in production for several years with both standard and custom advanced products for a wide range of end markets. Specifically, the technology supports the automotive industry as it moves towards full digitalization and software-defined architectures, in addition to the development of autonomous driving technologies,” said Jean-Marc Chéry, Chairman of the Management Board and Chief Executive Officer of STMicroelectronics. “We look forward to working with other leading experts on new generations of FD-SOI that will enable our customers to meet the challenges they face in their transition to full digitalization and contribute to the decarbonization of the economy. . »
