Project Wisdom: Red Hat and IBM want to control IS by voice

The open source Project Wisdom project aims to facilitate the use of the Ansible platform dedicated to automation by providing it with automatic code writing and natural language understanding capabilities.

Through a new community project called wisdomresearchers from Big Blue and Red Hat want to equip the Ansible platform with AI capabilities, in particular to allow developers of infrastructure as code to be more productive but also to allow – why not – the platform to be voice driven.

As a reminder, Ansible is an open source tool used to automate most information system configuration and administration tasks. A true open automation platform, it makes it possible to industrialize resource provisioning, server configurations, application deployment, process orchestration, update installation, etc. The exploitation of this platform involves the creation of scripts, baptized in this context Playbooks, responsible for executing instructions usually carried out manually. These scripts are written with the YAML language. When running, Ansible connects to the target system through SSH and launches these playbooks without requiring the prior deployment of agents.

For Ops teams, the transformation from “on prem” architectures to hybrid ones results in an increased complexity of their daily life and requires new skills, particularly in the field of the cloud. Based on this observation, the promoters of the Wisdom project want to enrich the Ansible universe with AIs to simplify the handling of Ansible by beginners, speed up the sometimes very repetitive and mechanical work of writing scripts and even enrich the natural language processing capability environment. Concretely, the user will be able to carry out his commands by voice, in English instead of writing scripts with the YAML language.

The project is based in particular on AI models derived from IBM’s AI for Code initiatives. It is part of a new trend that has emerged in recent months: using AI to automatically generate source code and serve as a co-pilot in a pure spirit of “pair programming” (pair programming). The AI ​​generates most of the code, with the developer improving or adjusting the code generated for him according to his intentions. These AI models bridge the gap between human thought expressed in natural language and writing the code that makes what you want to do happen.

The team behind the project is pursuing different avenues around content generation (conversion of natural language into YAML code), content discovery (to tell the user if the Playbook he is to design is similar to an existing one), content explanation (understanding the code and explanation of the resulting effects), and content optimization (suggestions for improvement and best practices). ” We live in fascinating times, where we continue to advance how today’s AI and hybrid cloud technologies build the computers and systems of tomorrow. », enthuses Ruchir Puri, chief scientist at IBM Research; IBM Fellow; VP of the IBM Technical Community.

Project Wisdom currently comes as an add-on to the Ansible extension for Visual Studio Code.

The goal is not only to facilitate the use of the platform but to hide part of the complexity inherent in hybrid architectures by interpreting these voice commands and building ad hoc automation workflows. In addition to Ops teams, the tool could eventually be used by developers who do not have the necessary knowledge to put their applications into production in a DevOps approach that increasingly entrusts Ops to Devs.
