LINZ, Austria, October 5, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei and Dronetech, Austria’s largest drone service provider, have announcement today new applications born from their collaboration in the field of 5G smart agriculture.

At Nussböckgut Vineyard, a centuries-old Upper Austrian estate first mentioned in a document in 1323, the two companies took stock of their pioneering project launched last year and presented how their 5G and IoT technologies can advance sustainability in agriculture. The two companies also hosted a panel of digitization and agriculture experts to discuss how technological innovation, and 5G in particular, can promote sustainable agriculture amid growing global security concerns. eating.

The two companies have announced that their collaboration is entering the second phase called “Digital Sky”. Huawei will provide cloud computing services in addition to 5G, which will serve as the basis for real-time analysis by artificial intelligence (AI). At the same time, equipped with high-resolution cameras and sensors, Dronetech’s drones will inspect land and objects, to capture images and collect data that will be processed by AI, and provide users with actionable conclusions instantly.

This technology helps farmers detect small insects, monitor crop conditions and predict harvests, allowing them to optimize the use of water, chemicals and pesticides precisely and with precision. minimal wastage.

In a second phase, the project also plans to develop a shared economy approach for drone services. Users from different sectors, including farmers, municipalities, companies or individuals, could rent the drones and their artificial intelligence solutions for a wide range of applications, such as inspection of solar panels, management of the traffic or power line wear detection.

“Huawei and Dronetech’s project on the use of drones in asparagus cultivation and viticulture is the first in Austria and here we want to analyze plant growth through real-time image recognition. In doing so, we want to improve harvests, yield and product quality,” explains Andreas Reichhardt, Director General of Directorate General VI – Telecommunications, Postal Services and Mining at the Austrian Ministry of Finance. “We want to seize the opportunities offered by the digital transformation; for this we need an optimal infrastructure, here the focus is on 5G. »

The biggest challenge with introducing 5G-equipped drones in agriculture is network coverage. Currently, 5G networks are primarily designed for end users who are primarily at ground level or indoors. High-quality coverage for drones, which typically fly 50 meters above the ground, has yet to be developed.

Erich Manzer, Deputy General Manager of Huawei Austria, said: “5G was developed for three key application areas: For high bandwidth, low latency and to connect millions of devices. The use of drones in combination with AI and 5G can solve many resource-intensive operations, such as maintenance or area surveillance. »

david hopf, CEO of Dronetech, said, “AI-powered drones are important enablers for the sustainable future of agriculture. In partnership with Huawei, we have developed a solution that can not only massively reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, but also improve farming efficiency and reduce labor costs. This solution helps to make our food supply chains more sustainable. »
