The first sod was lifted on May 6 to mark the start of construction work on the Precision Health and Translational Research Pavilion (PSPRT). Located in the heart of the Université de Sherbrooke Health Campus, the brand new building, valued at $65.5 million, will be erected over the next two years.
The work kicked off in the presence of the MNA for Saint-François, Ms. Geneviève Hébert, the rector of the Université de Sherbrooke, Professor Pierre Cossette, and the assistant rector and vice-rector at Administration and Sustainable Development, Professor Denyse Rémillard, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Professor Dominique Dorion, and the Deputy President and CEO of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS, Mme Robin Marie Coleman.
This pavilion will be an undeniable asset for research at the Université de Sherbrooke.
Today we are launching construction work on this pavilion for which we have worked so hard for several years with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This pavilion will allow the Université de Sherbrooke to stand out in research, in its concrete applications for the benefit of people, and to remain a leader in precision health in Quebec. The purpose of this new building is to develop personalized approaches based on interdisciplinary research, in the implementation of care and services aimed at maintaining people’s health.

We designed this pavilion in such a way as to create a facilitating living and working environment where the community can work and learn better, adds the professor. This is our biggest construction site. It will draw on the expertise of our project management teams for the creation of this flagship building of the Health Campus, both in terms of its quality of construction and its functionalities and its aesthetics.

The pavilion will address the lack of space for research and graduate studies at the Health Campus and allow for the expansion of research activities of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The complex will also support the fundamental change that research in precision medicine and health sciences is currently going through: the digital shift.
Concept of the PSPRT: working together to better advance health care
In addition to existing infrastructures, the PSPRT will promote the development of precision health and translational research. Clearly, it is research that goes from fundamental discovery to changes in clinical practices and direct patient care, with the help of digital health data.
Thus grouped together in the same pavilion, research teams will be able to collaborate better, both in the optimization of clinical decision support tools that improve healthcare trajectories and in the acceleration of new therapies for chronic diseases. . It is therefore in this perspective of openness, exchange and sharing that some forty teams from different disciplines will cohabit in common and shared spaces to promote the emergence of new ideas in health.
Digital health: an essential step towards a learning health system
While giving an important place to fundamental and experimental research, the PSPRT will support the research of researchers whose expertise in health informatics, artificial intelligence, data science, improvement of clinical practices and organizations of health services will come together to build a learning health system.
The PSPRT will also host the PREVALIS platform, the first platform for research, development, analysis and liaison in health informatics. The PSPRT will therefore give a prominent place to these teams, in accordance with government and university orientations and priorities in digital health.
In fact, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the UdeS are pioneers in health informatics. In partnership with the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS, its research teams are working in particular on the development of a vast research database drawn from the computerized patient file started at the CHUS more than 25 years ago, well before this tool becomes the norm.
Thanks to the PSPRT scientific project, these databases will be able to be combined with other research databases on various health determinants, such as the environment, lifestyle, biological, socioeconomic and demographic factors, etc Sharing this data will be highly beneficial for this advanced field. Teams will be able to do research in a different way by incorporating other determinants of health into genetic profiles. This way of doing things will make it possible to propose and explore new hypotheses.
