Welcome to Hashtag Trends, your roundup of tech news so far this week. Today is Thursday, March 31, 2022.

Meta chooses Toronto for an engineering center

The parent organization of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp plans to hire up to 2,500 employees, for remote and in-person positions across Canada over the next five years, to build the metaverse.

This is Meta’s most recent investment in Canada. Facebook opened an artificial intelligence research laboratory in Montreal in 2017.

Most jobs will be in engineering, as well as creating extended reality experiences and technologies.

This expansion of Meta should also be used to set up engineering teams in Canada for WhatsApp and Messenger, as well as for remote presence. In addition, Meta also plans to invest in its existing laboratories.

Beenox chooses Montreal for a video game studio

The video game development studio Beenox, based in Quebec, will have a new studio in Montreal, to increase its capacities, in particular for the game call of duty and other new projects.

Beenox says it plans to grow its team by more than 20% as part of this investment. The Beenox team, led by Nour Polloni, already has 400 employees, including 150 who were hired in 2021, and 50 in the Montreal region. The location of the Montreal studio has yet to be revealed.

“This new studio in Montreal will allow us to enrich our fields of expertise,” said Nour Polloni, studio director at Beenox, in a press release.

The skills sought to meet the needs of the Beenox studio in Montreal include programming and design. Beenox is a property of Activision Publishing.

Webex chooses Montreal and Toronto for data centers

Webex by Cisco, a US company that develops and markets on-demand web conferencing, video conferencing, unified communications and contact center services, will open data centers in Montreal and Toronto.

Webex says it wants to better serve its customers concerned about where their data is stored, such as public sector customers in British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Quebec, as well as customers in finance and healthcare.

Additionally, Webex offers failover and disaster recovery for Webex Meetings.

Artificial intelligence applied to mining exploration

A National Institute for Scientific Research project in artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to mineral exploration has secured $379,000 in public funding.

The objective is to develop neural networks of predictions, so as to process and interpret airborne imagery data and geophysical information, as well as to predict by algorithm the composition of the subsoil of sites which could become mining sites.

“Because of the amounts of information to be analyzed in the preliminary phases of exploration, data interpretation is a challenge for geologists,” says the Institute.
