PARIS, October 20, 2022 /CNW/ – The third stop of the 2022 HUAWEI CONNECT World Tour kicked off on Monday, at Paris. The theme of the event is ‘Unleash Digital’. Key topics explored by industry leaders, experts and partners from the information and communication technology (ICT) and green development sectors include harnessing digital productivity, promotion of the ecological and digital turn of theEurope and the creation of better performing digital ecosystems.
During During the event, Huawei hosted an afternoon conference and panel discussion focusing on the key role of new technologies in protecting nature in Europewhile presenting the new publication Tech4Nature – Solutions in Focus.
Developed under the Tech4Nature partnership between the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Huawei, Tech4Nature – Solutions in Focus analyzes best practices for using technology to achieve effective results in nature conservation. The publication details 22 projects in 19 countries.
“There is clearly a growing momentum and buy-in from the conservation community to use technology more, but also to develop and create new ways to apply it. Appropriate deployment of technology will help ensure longer lasting benefits from its application to achieve equitable and effective conservation action,” said James Hardcastle, IUCN Program Development Manager for Protected Areas.
When session, the NGO Rainforest Connection presented the various Nature Guardian projects it runs in Europe with Huawei and different local partners in ocean, wetland and forest ecosystems.
“Rainforest Connection uses AI and big data analytics powered by Huawei Cloud to monitor biodiversity and protect ecosystems around the world. By harnessing the power of sound, we are able to track thousands of species around the world and automatically detect the presence of illegal activity,” said Bourhan Yassin, CEO of Rainforest Connection.
Acoustic technologies are currently being used in projects in Europe such as dolphin and whale watching off the south coast ofIreland and studying the impact of climate change on bird and amphibian life in Austrian wetlands. Nature Guardian projects in Italy and Greece focus on preventing illegal logging, poaching and other harmful human activities.
The Porini Foundation from Switzerland also presented the pilot project it is carrying out in Switzerland with its partners IUCN and Huawei. The project aims to improve the accounting of carbon sinks in protected forest areas. The Porini Foundation has developed a forest carbon storage application based on cloud computing, blockchain and precision satellite imagery to enhance the transparency and traceability of transactions relating to forest carbon sinks and ensure the management and sustainable use of forest resources.
The session ended with a panel discussion on how digital technology can enable green transformation in Europewith partners from TECH4ALLacademics, and representatives of industry organizations exploring strategy and technology backlogs to achieve this goal.
Conference attendees are also invited to visit the TECH4ALL exhibit booth onsite to learn about other TECH4ALL digital inclusion projects that are underway in Europe. In particular, there is a first project of this type in Norway which was deployed in 2021 and 2022 to save wild Atlantic salmon, an endangered species, from extinction. The solution uses cameras combined with an artificial intelligence-based barrier system to identify Pacific salmon (an invasive species, an aggressive competitor for resources and a prolific breeder) and direct them to a retention pond, which was previously impossible to achieve. In the education component of TECH4ALL, the France DigiTruck project was also unveiled, showcasing the free digital skills training offered to empower communities in need, including unemployed youth and the elderly.
