The Israeli army on the offensive, two Palestinian women killed in the West Bank

JENIN: The Israeli army carried out a new muscular operation on Sunday in the Jenin area, a stronghold of armed Palestinian factions in the occupied West Bank, the scene of security incidents that claimed the lives of two Palestinian women.

Following two deadly attacks perpetrated in two weeks in Tel Aviv by Palestinians from the Jenin region, Israeli soldiers carried out a series of operations on Sunday that led to exchanges of fire and around 20 arrests , an Israeli security source told AFP.

Israeli forces, which limited access to the Jenin area this weekend, said they seized weapons stolen in Israel during these operations, which in fact injured around ten people, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

In the evening, the situation remained tense in Jenin, local sources indicated, reporting Israeli army fire the day after an army operation that left one dead, a fighter from Islamic Jihad, the main armed Islamist movement after Hamas.

“The State of Israel has gone on the offensive (…) and will do whatever is necessary to put an end to terrorism. We will settle accounts with all those who are linked, directly or indirectly, to the “deadly” attacks that have hit Israel in recent weeks, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, near Bethlehem, a 40-year-old widow and mother of six who was “suspiciously” heading towards the military despite “warning shots” died of wounds inflicted by gunfire from Israeli soldiers, reports said. the army and the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

And in Hebron, in the southern West Bank, Israeli police said they shot dead a Palestinian woman who stabbed and “slightly” injured an officer in the center of the powder keg.

“A difficult day”

Since March 22, Israel has been hit by four attacks, the first two perpetrated by Israeli Arabs linked to the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS) and the last two by Palestinians from the Jenin sector. These attacks resulted in a total of 14 deaths.

According to an AFP tally, twelve Palestinians, including assailants, have been killed in violence since that same date.

The latest attack in Israel on Thursday claimed the lives of three Israelis – Eitam Megini and Tomer Morad, childhood friends in their 20s, and Barak Lufan, a 35-year-old father of three – in the heart of the Tel-Aviv metropolis.

Thousands of Israelis gathered on Sunday to attend the funerals of the three men, which took place in the city of Kfar Saba (center) and at Kibbutz Ginosar (north).

“You appeared to me yesterday in a dream and told me it was all a joke. I believed you, and then I woke up,” Tomer Morad’s girlfriend Ariel Weinblat said during his funeral oration. “I love you, my heart is bleeding,” she added.

“It’s a difficult day,” Prime Minister Bennett said of the funeral, repeating on Sunday that he had given carte blanche to the armed forces in its “war on terrorism”.

Demonstration in support of Jenin

“We will do whatever it takes, whatever is necessary, for as long and wherever necessary to restore security,” Israeli army chief Aviv Kochavi also warned earlier this weekend.

The Islamist movements of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, which have thousands of fighters in the Gaza Strip but also many members in refugee camps in the West Bank, had welcomed all the anti-Israeli attacks

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, leader of the secular Fatah party, condemned the two recent attacks perpetrated by Palestinians in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area.

Later Sunday, a demonstration is planned in the center of Ramallah, a city in the West Bank where the Palestinian Authority is based, in support of the people of Jenin.
