Responsibility for artificial intelligence (AI) ethics rests with senior managers, specifically, in the non-technical fieldwho recognize its importance for European organizations and even identify it as a source of competitive differentiation.
A new study from IBM’s Institute for Business Value has revealed a sea change in the roles of those charged with leading and carrying out AI ethics in organisations, where at European level a non- technical, for example, is identified as having primary responsibility for AI ethics.
Thus, 64% of respondents in Europe cite. the CEO or other high-level leader as a major influencer in their organization’s ethics strategy, although more than half cite members of the leadership of the organization. board of directors (56%) and at shareholders (37%).
On the other hand, almost three quarters of senior executives surveyed in Europe agree on this point. ethics in AI is important to their organizations. For 73% of them, ethics is a source of competitive differentiation, and more than half (55%) of those who consider AI and AI ethics important indicate that their organizations exceed their competitors on sustainability, social responsibility and diversity and inclusion.
The report highlights that many companies have started to make progress. In fact, more than half of respondents in Europe say their organizations have started to integrate AI ethics into their current approach to business ethics.
Over 42% of respondents in Europe say their organization has… created specific ethical mechanisms for AIsuch as an AI project risk assessment framework and audit/review process.
Globally, according to respondents, there are now significantly more CEOs (79%) willing to embed ethics into their AI practicesup from just 21% in 2018. And more than half of the companies that participated in the study publicly endorsed the Common Principles of AI Ethics.
However, less than a quarter of organizations surveyed globally have begun to implement AI ethics, and less than 20% of respondents agree that their company’s practices and actions match (or exceed) their stated principles and values.
Sixty-eight percent of companies surveyed worldwide recognize this. it is important to have a diverse and inclusive workplace to reduce bias in AIbut the results show that AI teams remain significantly less diverse than their organizations’ workforces: 5.5 times fewer women, four times fewer LGBT+ people, and 1.7 times fewer people of different races .
