Avatar 2: a huge universe with Star Wars and Marvel’s MCU as models?

What about after Avatar 2 and its sequels if success is there? Will James Cameron take his franchise out of dark rooms for different projects like his little neighbors?

The machine Avatar 2 is launched, in France and all over the world, but at home, the World Cup seems to take over. First estimates that do not yet assume a disappointment, or even worse, a flop. But in case of total success, what would be next? The birth of a huge universe for the big blue men?

Avatar 2 up to 7 at the cinema, and series on the small screen?

If Avatar 2 and all its sequels are a hit at the box office, could James Cameron expand his universe with spin-offs or series like Star Wars, Marvel Where DC ? In 5 to ten years, why not according to producer Jon Landau. But it would take certain technical prerequisites to facilitate such a colossal project, with the same requirements as for current and future films.

When it comes to the Avatar spin-offs, the problem is that the characters are created digitally and it doesn’t quite fit the TV model yet. But maybe ten years from now, if we inject enough technique, deep learning and artificial intelligence into the process, it might be possible to shorten filming times. I don’t know if we’ll get to real time, but I think we might get close enough to make television, but it won’t be for at least five or even ten years. But if Avatar becomes a universe, a world in its own right and the desire is there, yes. It could possibly happen.

Obviously, there’s no point in shooting the comet when you know that the future of the franchise totally depends on the success of Avatar 2. A film that must be one of the most profitable of all time given the huge investments that freak out James Cameron.

Transmedia projects that will continue

Even if James Cameron and Jon Landau refuse spin-offs or series Disney+, that does not mean that Avatar could not invite itself elsewhere. Dark Horse has published comics before, there’s been a show with Cirque du Soleil, and there’s a big Pandora: The World of Avatar themed area at Disneyland in Florida. In 2023, Ubisoft must also release a game that will be linked to Avatar 2: The Way of the Water.

And no question either of stupidly following the neighbors just to do like them:

You know, we’d rather set trends than follow them, but Pandora is a world that can extend beyond film. We did it with our traveling show, with Cirque du Soleil (Toruk – First Flight), we went back thousands of years in the past with the story of the first Toruk Makto. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, we have recreated Pandora. After the filmic sequels, we will have projected the story two generations into the future. We want to continue to move in this direction. We are working on comics with Dark Horse and have just released our first volume. We want to continue building this world. We believe that people find these characters inspiring and ambitious in different contexts and we want to continue on this path.

Avatar 2 is currently at the cinema in all possible formats (VF 2D, VOSTFR 2D, ATMOS 3D HDR VOSTFR…).
