A few weeks ago, we introduced you to this artificial intelligence (AI) that allowed you to discover what would look like these celebrities if they were still alive, thanks to a Turkish artist specializing in staging and photography. It was particularly the opportunity to see what could look like Bruce Lee, almost 50 years after his death. And indeed, a report recently published brought new elements concerning the causes from death of the legend of the Martial Arts.
“be water”, but not too much?
Bruce Lee died on July 20, 1973, only 32 years old at the time.. Nicknamed “the Little Dragon”, the Chinese-American actor made himself known to the general public thanks to films like The Big Boss (1971) or even The fist of Fury (1972). It will then be considered the greatest martial arts master of world cinema of the 20th century, having thus paved the way for other actors in martial arts films, of all origins, ranging from Jackie Chan to Chuck Norris, passing by Jet Li, Jean-Claude Van Damme or Wesley Snipes. His premature death will be one of the elements that will contribute to making him a legend in cinema and martial arts.
And justly, the abrupt nature of Lee’s death has long been the subject of all sorts of speculation, with some fans even speculating that the star was murdered. As reported varietya book titled Bruce Lee: A Lifereleased in 2018, also suggested the star died of heat exhaustion. But a recent study seems to bring new hypotheses which could perhaps help to better understand this tragedy.
Published in the December 2022 edition of Clinical Kidney Journal by a group of kidney specialists located in Spain, the study suggests that Lee’s death was caused by an “inability of his kidneys to expel excess water”. When he died, doctors concluded that the actor had succumbed to cerebral edema. But recent research on the subject suggests that he was actually a victim of hyponatremia.thus designating an abnormally low concentration of sodium in the blood, which can in particular be caused by an excess of water compared to sodium.
We hypothesize that Bruce Lee died of a specific form of kidney dysfunction. The actor must have been unable to excrete enough water through his urine to maintain homeostasis, fluid regulation. This can lead to hyponatremia, cerebral edema and death within hours if excess water intake is not compensated by water excretion in the urine.
Since hyponatremia is common, as seen in up to 40% of hospitalized people, and can lead to death from excessive water ingestion, even in healthy young people, it is necessary to spread more widely the concept that excessive ingestion of water can kill.
Nevertheless, other factors may also have played a role in the actor’s untimely passing, among which we find in particular his regular consumption of marijuana, which can thus have an effect on his thirst. But it also appears that Lee was on a mostly liquid-based diet, consuming a lot of fruit juice and water.
Finally, Lee’s kidney dysfunction could also be explained by his medical historyin the sense that the actor was taking certain prescription drugs, and that he had also had health problems with the levels of the kidneys a few months before his death, greatly weakening his organs.
