Dreame L10s Ultra robot vacuum cleaner test: an effective household helper

Convenience of use

The L10s Ultra relies on sobriety. Coated in white with a few silver accents, the robot matches many interiors. 9.7 cm high, it passes easily under low furniture. The laser rangefinder, however, makes it take a few millimeters, but thanks to it the navigation gains in precision. Especially since an RGB camera, multiple sensors and an artificial intelligence system are also part of it. The L10s Ultra is then supposed to move intelligently, without wasting time while avoiding obstacles.

Classically, three commands are located on the cover of the robot: to start a cleaning of the surface, a localized cleaning or to send it to its base.

Three of the most classic touches.

Other commands are precisely located on this docking station: to start cleaning the home, dry mops or ask the robot to leave its base. Rather compact, the station is 56.8 cm high, 42.3 cm deep and 34 cm wide. Within it, a 3 l dust bag discharges the small dust collector integrated into the robot, installed behind the silver magnetic cover. The base also includes two water tanks: the first of 2.5 liters is filled with clean water, while the other (2.4 liters) collects dirty water after cleaning the floors. If the capacity of the water tanks is rather substantial, Roidmi is more far-sighted and equips its Eva with two tanks of 4 l each.

Small originality concerning the L10s Ultra: the water tank is not accessible. The base takes care of filling it when necessary, but it is not removable or visible. Moreover, its low capacity of 80 ml forces the Dreame to refuel a little too frequently during the washing session and it wastes time making multiple round trips. Either way, it’s that water reservoir built into the vacuum that moistens the magnetic rotating mops that spin at 180 rpm. Two in number and in microfiber, they stand up in front of a thin carpet and at the end of the cleaning. This option avoids wetting the floor again when the L10s Ultra returns to its base.

For more efficiency, it is possible to install a detergent cartridge sold by Dreame. She slips between the two water tanks and it is the robot that determines the right quantity to inject. Please note that this is a proprietary format and therefore you cannot use just any product sold on the market; shame !

In the center of the robot is the main brush, composed only of rubber blades and they are reminiscent of that of the Roborock Q7 Max +. To complete its action, a small brush with three branches is attached to the side and allows waste and dust to be brought back towards the main brush.

Connectivity and app

The L10s Ultra is controlled via the controls placed on its cover and on its base. But obviously the Xiaomi Home app (or Dreamehome) is still the best way to manage the device.

To pair it, the user has the choice between using the QR Code provided by the manufacturer and manually registering the robot. Once this manipulation is done, it must be connected to the network to have access to all the features. A first mapping is necessary to record the environment of the vacuum cleaner. The map is then displayed and is also particularly detailed: the route of the L10s Ultra is precise and the obstacles are notified, sometimes even recognized by the device. Note that the L10s Ultra will (normally) recognize “passenger” obstacles and that it will not forget to pass where it would have encountered a plush during its first exploration.

After this initial step, washing options are available. The robot can then vacuum, wash or do both at the same time. Four suction intensities are available, as well as three water flow levels. An entire section is also dedicated to the device’s self-cleaning settings. The user can then adjust the frequency of washing and drying the mops, as well as that of emptying the dust collector.

When it’s time to start a cleaning cycle, the L10s Ultra can mop the whole house or focus on a specific area or room. These last two options also open up the possibility of cleaning the area several times in a row. Conversely, the user can block access to certain places by drawing forbidden areas and virtual walls.

For this model, Dreame reiterated its wish to integrate the “multi-storey” option. Thanks to it, it is possible to save up to three different maps. If they do not correspond exactly to his home, the user can merge two sectors, separate areas to create two rooms and rename them. A 3D map is also available, but let’s be honest, the transcribed environment is not correct; it’s more of a gimmick than a useful feature.

Finally, a host of settings can be adjusted according to the needs of the user. Cleaning history, routines and cycle programming are then available. The robot can also be prohibited from cleaning during a defined period, at night for example. The health status of different parts of the robot vacuum cleaner can be viewed, in order to maintain proper cleaning performance. Finally, an option to avoid animal excrement can be activated. Which, we must admit, has not been tested by the editors.

Maintenance

If the white color can seduce more than one, it is above all more messy. Fingerprints are more discreet, but the tray of its base makes the detritus clearly visible.

And it is this same base that takes care of the maintenance of mops. They are effectively rinsed and dried with hot air once the washing session is over. The cleaning stand is removable to clean it properly. For more efficiency, the user can wash the removable mops in the washing machine at 60°C.

The collector, if obviously drained by the base, can be emptied by hand. It opens on the side and thus releases the sucked up detritus. We would still have preferred another opening system, similar to that of the Dreame L10 Pro for example.

Finally, to test the filtration efficiency of the device, we first weighed the HEPA filter then we asked the robot to suck up 20 g of cocoa before weighing it again. The less this ultimate barrier gains weight, the more efficient the upstream filtration is. At the end of the test, only 1.2 g remains lodged in the HEPA filter, after emptying at the station; which is a good performance. For comparison, the Roborock S7 MaxV Plus only retained 0.2g within it, which is pretty much perfect.

Navigation system

Equipped with an advanced navigation system, the L10s Ultra was expected at the turn. To help it move properly, the robot is equipped with a laser rangefinder, several sensors and an RGB camera. He can also count on the artificial intelligence with which he is armed to recognize his environment and the objects standing in his way.

We were able to notice a fluid trajectory from the first movements. The Dreame is advancing at a good pace and seems unhesitating. He begins by outlining the room, or the area, before zigzagging it.

Facing the curtains, the robot stops and does not venture to the other side. The dust in this place then remains in its place. If this situation is regrettable, it recurs for each robot equipped with a laser range finder; the latter seeing the curtains as a wall in front of him. On the other hand, the chair bars are only a detail for the Dreame, as are the small objects (a vial in this case) and the power cables. This last performance is also to be welcomed as it is exceptional.

The main difficulty lies in cleaning a thick carpet. The robot tangles the brushes in the less fine ones and does not manage to pass over them correctly. If he ends up sucking the fabric, he sometimes sees imaginary obstacles placed on it, which he then prefers to circumvent for no reason.

As we said, the application is very detailed. Combined with a good recognition of obstacles, it identifies and notifies the different objects encountered by the robot.

Finally, to better understand the robot’s navigation strategy, we spread 100 g of sawdust in different places in our test laboratory. By the end of the cycle, most piles have been vacuumed, even those placed against complaints. However, if the corners of the laboratory were cleaned better than with the D10 Plus, the results could still be improved; the fault of the side brush which sometimes ejects the detritus rather than bringing it back to the center of the robot. Finally, the robot harvested 84.6 g of sawdust.

Suction

As we said before, the side brush of the L10s Ultra is not the most efficient. During the suction tests on hard ground, the robot then ejects part of the 100 g of rice scattered in the laboratory out of reach. It harvests 92.7% of the beans when set to standard mode and 94.6% in boost mode. These are obviously good performances, but for comparison the Samsung Jet Bot AI + managed to swallow 100% and 98% of the rice.

The trend is reversed on fine carpet. Indeed, more comfortable on this surface, the L10s Ultra sucks up almost all of the 100 g, whether at standard or turbo power.

Finally, we install the thick carpet in the laboratory. If it is the most difficult coating for the robots to vacuum, this time, it is not its long hairs that have been the problem. Indeed, once again, the side brush puts the Dreame in difficulty, which struggles to climb the coating. By blocking itself under the carpet, it prevents the device from sucking up a few grains of rice. The L10s Ultra then harvests 92% in standard mode and 97% in boost mode. The iRobot Roomba J7+ had swallowed only 75% in turbo mode.

Versatile, the L10s Ultra is also capable of mopping the floor. Equipped with its two removable mops, the robot would be able to remove stubborn stains. We obviously challenged him to clean our lab floor. Find the verdict in this article.
