The second episode of Halo introduces a major character from video games, namely the artificial intelligence Cortana. The actress chosen to play her is well known to fans of the video game franchise.
Warning, spoilers. It is advisable to have seen the first episodes of Halo, available on myCANAL, before continuing to read this article.
The first episodes of Halo, available on myCANAL, not only set up the 26th century war between United Nations Space Command and the Covenant Alliance, a military-theocratic coalition of several advanced alien species throughout the history of Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber), but also introduced an iconic character from the video game franchise.
From the second episode, we understand that Master Chief is sensitive to an alien artifact, highly sought after by the Covenant, which makes him relive memories of his childhood. This discovery makes him question his existence and his mission and the Spartan will doubt the true intentions of the United Nations Space Command and the Navy Intelligence Service, but also of Catherine Halsey (Natascha McElhone).
Halo on CANAL+: is the live action series as addictive as the game?
But the latter manages to regain his confidence as she wakes up Cortana, an artificial intelligence that she created and that she wishes to implant in the Spartan’s brain. And if we are to believe the actress Natascha McElhone, with whom we were able to discuss during a round table with other journalists, her first steps in the next episodes will be “really very cool, with the whole process of its creation and invention”.
The actress has also learned a lot about artificial intelligence for the series: “I found all of this really fascinating, this idea that morality always lags behind the technology that becomes possible. I think everyone around Catherine Halsey hasn’t understood that her technology is viable and should be allowed.
And I like the fact that she doesn’t really seem to care what other people think because I think in her mind, just being one way of thinking isn’t going to help us evolve our species. And the latter needs it since the Covenant wants to destroy us and the Spartans need help.”
Cortana had to have another face
And if Natascha McElhone was so interested in artificial intelligence, it’s because she was originally supposed to play Cortana! The actress had indeed been cast for two roles, Dr. Catherine Halsey and Cortana. But IGN revealed in November 2020 that she could no longer take on both roles due to scheduling issues due to the pandemic.
And the Halo teams therefore turned to the obvious to choose the incarnation of Cortana: Jen Taylor, the actress who lends her voice to this same character in all Halo video games, from Halo: Combat Evolved to the latest Halo: Infinite.
The voice actress is also known for vocally embodying Zoey in Left 4 Dead, but also Princess Peach, Toad and Toadette in various Mario video games. For the Halo series, she resumes her role as Cortana and embodies it once again vocally but also physically thanks to motion capture.
We would like to give thanks to the writer of this article for this remarkable material
