Vietnam participates in the 214th session of the Executive Board of UNESCO

The 214and session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) opened on April 4, 2022 in Paris, with the participation of 58 member countries. This is the first meeting of the Executive Board for the 2021-2025 term aimed at implementing important and directional decisions of UNESCO in the times ahead.

Speaking during the debates, the head of the Vietnamese delegation, Pham Quang Hiêu, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, stressed that the meeting took place at an “important” moment. According to him, the impacts of global problems such as the Covid-19 pandemic and violent and armed conflicts not only contribute to affecting global economic development, increase inequalities, erase the achievements of nations, but also threaten the lives of peoples. , peace, security and development of the world. In this context, more than ever, UNESCO’s mission to “build peace in the minds of peoples” must be respected and pursued.

Vice-Minister Pham Quang Hiêu said that UNESCO and the members of the Executive Board must take specific measures in the fields of education, culture, science, information and communication; implement the Medium-Term Vision and Strategy for the period 2022-2029, as well as the Program and Budget for the period 2022-2025; promote a number of new issues such as open science, ethics in artificial intelligence, the future of education … contribute to the organization of the United Nations Summit on the transformation of education in September 2022 in New York whose next preparatory meeting is expected in Paris.

Vice-Minister Pham Quang Hiêu stressed that Vietnam always attaches importance to multilateral cooperation in general and the role of UNESCO in particular, pledging to contribute more actively and responsibly to the activities of the UNESCO as a member of the Executive Board 2021-2025.

On this occasion, the head of the Vietnamese delegation met with the President of the General Assembly of UNESCO and heads of delegations of other countries to promote multilateral cooperation and campaign for Vietnam’s candidacy as a member of the Intergovernmental Committee on the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003 Convention) for the period 2022-2026.

Vice-Minister Pham Quang Hiêu also had talks with Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO. He worked with the Deputy Director-General of UNESCO, the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 Convention… to discuss the strengthening of cooperation in the time to come, in order to concretize the Memorandum of Understanding between Vietnam and UNESCO for the period 2021-2025 signed in 2021, as part of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to UNESCO Headquarters.

Director General Audrey Azoulay spoke highly of Vietnam’s role and contribution to UNESCO’s cooperation. She pledged to implement measures to strengthen relations between UNESCO and Vietnam in 2022, a significant year with the 45th anniversary of Vietnam’s membership in this UN organization. The Managing Director also gladly accepted the invitation to visit Vietnam in 2022.

The Executive Board meeting will last until April 13, 2022, to discuss more than 50 topics on UNESCO’s activities in professional fields, including culture, education, natural and social sciences, information and communication, as well as organizational, financial, budgetary and programmatic matters. The Executive Council is expected to approve, meanwhile, a list of new Global Geoparks and expand their boundaries, including the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Global Geopark in Vietnam./.
