Produced water of good quality, having the least possible loss of production right up to the subscriber, being more reactive on the network in the event of interventions… these are the missions carried out by the water authority of Nevers agglomeration. This is where new technologies will come into play to carry it out. Explanations.

Since the beginning of last year, the water authority has put into service an application developed internally with the collaboration of the Lacroix-Sofrel group. This experiment is part of a European program called Urbact. “This application is integrated with our supervision. This allows us to trace data from all our sites,” says Dominique Derangère, head of the water and sanitation department.

To develop this application, the technicians of the water authority had to cross multiple and diverse data: “Invoicing data, what people consume. We cut our sector to get an overview. We also came across production archives. We went back five years of production, which allowed us to have thresholds and know the consumption habits of subscribers depending on the season”. The agents of the water authority also rely on the data which arrives in real time with the sensors deployed on the network.

So many elements which allow, by a subtle game of observation and calculation between the productions and the layout of the old readings, to detect very quickly if a problem has arisen.

Effort has also been made on the readability of the application. At first glance, the technicians spot the leaks. “We have highlighted the sectors that are leaking or not. A map with colors in green is fine. If it’s red, no,” describes Fabrice Paccamiccio, drinking water manager. Other components were then developed which allow the sensors, “we can thus interrogate the sensors and detect the red zones”.

The information recorded is much more precise, particularly on the distribution provided during the day and night. “At night, normally, we do not distribute. If so, there is a problem, ”underlines Fabrice Paccamiccio. The latter highlights the benefits of this application. “It really allows us to see how our sensors are working.” He takes as an example a problem that affected the town of Germigny-sur-Loire. “We were able to intervene before the network emptied”.

The Urbact program

As part of Urbact, a European exchange and learning program promoting sustainable urban development, Nevers agglomeration is a partner in the project entitled IoTXchange, led by the city of Fundão in Portugal and bringing together eight European communities.

“We were asked to develop a digital platform. The aim is to identify different sensors in sectors such as water, car park surveillance, urban lighting, heating of municipal buildings. How do we centralize all the data and how do we optimize operations? », Notes Dominique Derangère.

Version 2 at the end of the year

It is within the framework of this project that this experiment was set up between the Eau de Nevers Agglomération management company and Lacroix-Sofrel. This project amounts to 700,000 €, it is financed at 70% by European funds. “The Lacroix group should offer this process to other structures”, a path expected by the agents of the water management.

“This application is original. We control all our data. This should be further improved. Fabrice Paccamiccio cites, among other things, the fact of “having alarms on leaks in the networks”. Version 2 is in development. It should be completed in the last quarter of 2022. Nevers Agglomeration serves as a test. The goal? We will try to analyze more finely with an artificial intelligence that will be able to monitor the sensors”. In the end, savings are made, “but above all it is the preservation of water resources”.

The water authority manages 11 municipalities of Nevers Agglo. Nevers and Varennes-Vauzelles are under delegation with Saur, which represents just over 11,000 subscribers.

With the use of these connected sensors, the equivalent of the consumption of 2,000 subscribers is saved over a year. Previously, 30% loss was to be deplored, or 400,000 m3, or the equivalent of the consumption of 4,000 subscribers.
