Jeanick Brisswalter, President of Université Côte d’Azur, will present the degree of “Doctor Honoris Causa” to Yann LeCun, Vice President and “Chief AI Scientist” at Meta and Professor at New York University, on Saturday April 16, 2022 at the Palais des Antipolis Congress of Antibes – Juan les Pins, in the presence of Jean Leonetti, Mayor of Antibes Juan-les-Pins and President of the Sophia Antipolis urban community. This title is one of the most prestigious distinctions awarded by French universities.
This graduation takes place as part of Yann LeCun’s trip to the Côte d’Azur for the first edition of the World AI Cannes Festival. The ceremony will take place after an exceptional general public conference on the advances and uses of artificial intelligence.
A researcher in artificial intelligence, artificial vision and robotics, Yann LeCun is considered one of the pioneers of machine learning, neural networks and image recognition. He is the winner of the Association for Computing Machinery’s 2019 Turing Award – the equivalent of a Nobel Prize in computer science – (along with Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio) for “conceptual and practical advances that have made deep neural networks a critical component of computing. ”
Doctor Honoris Causa, one of the most prestigious distinctions awarded by French universities
The Doctor Honoris causa is awarded by universities to honor “personalities of foreign nationality for eminent services rendered to science, letters or the arts, to France or to the university”. The 1st degree of “doctor honoris causa” from Université Côte d’Azur was awarded in 2018 to Alessio Figalli, Fields medal 2018, who began his career at the JA Dieudonné mathematics laboratory at Université Côte d’Azur. In November 2021, choreographer Lucinda Chlids received the 2nd degree of “doctor honoris causa”. In 2022, Université Côte d’Azur will award other Doctor Honoris Causa degrees to prestigious international personalities.
