To drive with the cheapest fuel in France, Superethanol, there are only two solutions. Buy a compatible new vehicle, as offered by Ford or Land Rover, or invest in a conversion of your petrol vehicle. To convert your petrol car to bioethanol, you will need to buy and have an approved box installed.

The liter of E85 is often one euro cheaper than the SP95 E10. But switching to ethanol also leads to overconsumption often estimated at 20 or 25% compared to the use of lead-free. Until now we thought that all cameras were equal on this point. But that could change.

A new generation of enclosure

According to its manufacturer Flexfuel Energy Development, a new unit would be able to improve engine efficiency and thus reduce overconsumption by 2 to 3%.

The result of three years of research and development, this new generation of converter boxes is the subject of several patent applications. It is also adaptable to all gasoline direct injection engines. But how does it work?

The manufacturer FFED speaks of an artificial intelligence capable of refining the injection of ethanol to adapt to the latest engines. Superethanol-E85 is a fuel 30% less calorific than Unleaded 95.

Driving on E85 therefore requires injecting more fuel into the engine to prevent it from operating in a “lean mixture” which could degrade it. It is from this characteristic that the overconsumption of conversions to ethanol comes from.

The box makes it possible to manage the addition of additional fuel injection necessary for the proper functioning of the ethanol engine. This new type of box is no longer content to simply add fuel. It manages to adapt, autonomously and in real time, the quantity of fuel required.

A case that adapts to your vehicle

Until now the installer took a signal and settled on it by settings. Today the so-called “intelligent” box reads the signal and self-adapts to have an optimum setting at all times.

On paper, the injection of ethanol would thus be optimized, and could adapt to the most recent engines meeting the latest standards.

A statement from the manufacturer to be verified in real conditions of use of course. But this is not the only promise of this new unit, which covers 90% of petrol vehicles equipped with a direct injection engine on the market.

Easy installation

By requiring fewer adjustments, this new box also promises to save money during installation. The installation time is reduced, and the average labor bill goes, depending on the manufacturer, from €200 to €150.

And good news too, the price of the box itself remains the same. We know that it will be available in April in centers approved by the brand. A novelty that could further stimulate a booming market.
