#IAFP, or how I illustrated the press with an AI

During the month of August, I decided to experiment the creation of images with a new tool: an “artificial intelligence” and to share this on my instagram account and on Twitter. You must have heard of them: Dall-e, Midjourney, Dreamstudio, Stable Diffusion, etc. these online tools allow you to create images by entering a sentence such as: ” A yellow plane flying under the sea with little dogs dancing on its wings in the style of van gogh “. These tools are quite uneven and what is fun is to see the surprise of the result.

As always with new digital tools, before jumping in headlong, I wonder what to do with them, in my own way, with an idea, a concept. As you know, I like news, the press, information (that’s why I created over 10 years ago now) and that’s why I proposed to these different AIs to create a visual corresponding to a press title.

Obviously, my idea is not to say that the illustration or the press photo is dead (some people think so but I find that all these forms of expression overlap, complement each other, sometimes help each other…), and on this project, my idea is to see how an AI interprets current topics with titles often based on puns, figures of speech, sometimes questions, etc. Sometimes the result is very realistic, sometimes very futuristic, sometimes a little missed too. It’s the game, but it offers a different reflection on the news which makes me think that the image generated sometimes says a lot more about the imagination that we have around the various political, economic, social subjects, etc. than the article itself.

To group all these images, I created the hashtag #IAFP (on Twitter and Instagram), such as the artificial intelligence of AFP, Agence France Presse(It’s a wink and a parody, don’t sue me huh ;-))

I therefore share this work of creation and research with you below.

The process

To carry out this project, I simply followed the news closely and I translated certain titles into English to feed them to artificial intelligence (Mainly Midjourney and Dall-E). I then carried out a little graphic and typographical formatting to specify the title of the news, the date and that it is a news image produced by an AI.

The following ?

I will share this with you very soon, but in August, I also produced, in the same way, news visuals from the paper newspaper Liberation, from the Nouvel Obs and I made a small difference by recovering the latest Marie-Claire magazine and asking the AI to generate the visuals of its (many) advertisements. The results of all this graphic research arouse my curiosity, also question me about the conceptual and graphic poverty despite an apparent visual richness. But hey, these are only tools that are often naive and act in the first degree, I have to keep pushing them to some of their limits 😉

We would love to say thanks to the writer of this short article for this incredible web content
