Explainable AI (XAI) is the practice of designing and developing artificial intelligence models and systems in a way that their decision-making processes and outcomes can be understood and interpreted by humans. As AI technologies become more sophisticated and complex, there is a growing need to make their inner workings transparent and accessible, especially in critical applications where trust, accountability, and ethical considerations are paramount.


XAI aims to bridge the gap between the “black-box” nature of many advanced AI algorithms and the need for human comprehension. It involves techniques and methodologies that enable users to grasp how a model arrives at its predictions or decisions. This is particularly important for scenarios where AI systems are used to support human decision-making, such as in medical diagnoses, financial risk assessments, and autonomous driving.


Various approaches are employed in XAI, including generating human-interpretable explanations for model outputs, visualizing feature importance, highlighting decision paths, and simplifying complex model architectures. By providing understandable explanations, XAI not only enhances user trust and adoption but also enables stakeholders to identify potential biases, errors, or ethical concerns that might arise from AI decision-making.
