On Friday, Meta unveiled a new generative AI tool in development designed to create short videos with audio using text prompts and images.

The company touted “Meta Movie Gen” as a significant advance in the use of AI technology to create both video and audio. Meta plans to get input from filmmakers and content creators as it prepares to launch this AI video creation tool. There are currently no announced release dates for Movie Gen.

“While these base models have many exciting applications, it’s important to remember that generative AI will not replace the creativity of artists and animators,” Meta said in a statement. The tool allows users to create unique videos from text prompts, including clips up to 16 seconds long that can contain personal photos, as described by Meta.

“Our model delivers superior results in creating personalized videos that preserve human appearance and movement,” Meta said. “Animate a day in the life video image to share on Reels, edit with text, or create an animated birthday message for a friend to send via WhatsApp.”

According to the company, Movie Gen represents the third phase of AI-powered video generation in Meta. The growing availability of artificial intelligence tools to create realistic videos has raised concerns about “deepfakes” that manipulate images of people.
