OpenAI's deprecation policy
- Generally available models get at least 6 months' notice, specialized variants (chat-latest, codex, deep-research) at least 3 months, and preview models can get much less, for example 2 weeks, unless safety or compliance concerns require a faster timeline.
- Customers who use an affected model are told by email. "Legacy" means a model gets no more updates and is likely to be deprecated later.
- The models endpoint (GET /v1/models) now returns a shutdown_date field, which OpenAI recommends for monitoring.
